It's the book I've been waiting to happen for decades now! I've been yearning for a book which can show me step by step detail and order and reasons for voicing, and here it is. The cross referencing is plentiful. It requires a lot of paging back and forth, but the real explaination is really on the page you turn to. Bravo!

Like the definitive encyclopedia for pianos all in one book. Can be used to purchase a piano, to tune one, to regulate one, or to repair one. Now the price looks too low.
helping me to get some grip on tuning, listening for beats, doing minor and major repairs on my three (!) old uprights. I am a newbie at piano tinkering, and piano playing, but I enjoy it. And I found this book to be very helpful. Sometimes even daunting, because I think it is for experts too. The expert parts I skim through pretty fast. What I need to know right now, is usually available in a clear step-by-step form.
This book is indeed comprehensive, with details that are difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere unless you spend a year to become a certified piano technician. It's the best I've found for showing you how your piano works and how to care for it. You'll still need a trained tuner/technician, of course, but it gives you a great appreciation for what they do.

An incredibly complete and well-presented guide to piano history and technology. As a Registered Piano Technician with forty years of experience in the field, I have found in just the first couple of hours of reading that this book answered a lot of questions I still had and has verified many procedures and practices that I have had to figure out on my own, or seek help from others. It is well-researched and documented and the only slight improvement I can think of would be to increase some of the type size and the size of some of the illustrations. The vast majority of the book is quite readable, even with my 79-year-old eyes, but I find myself reaching for a magnifying glass now and then to better see the details in some of the pictures. This work is a monumental achievement just in sheer volume of information, but it is also well-organized and easily accessed with carefully arranged cross-references. This book should be in the hands of any and every person who is, or aspires to be, in the field of piano tuning and repair. It's worth every dollar of the price.
As indicated by previous posters, this is indeed a a most comprehensive book on the subject. The chapter alone on the geometry of the action was itself something of a thorough dissertation on the subject. And even though I'm in my fortieth year as a piano tech, I'm still learning new things, new tricks. Case in point........I seldom lacquer voice hammers but his method for doing(where the action is placed perpendicular to the ground) is something I'll have to try the next time that occasion arises. And speaking of voicing. He didn't mention anything about electric voicing, a technique I've used for several years since a close colleague turned me on to it. It is especially effective for very hard hammers because with the needles rotating as fast as they do, they manage to penetrate the felt more effortlessly than the traditional "stabbing" technique we use(which means naturally less stress and strain on the forearm).
